Large Intestine: Vermiform Appendix Flashcards
Site of Vermiform Appendix
at the Right Iliac fossa Extending from Posteromedial Apsect of Caecum 1 inch below and lateral to Ileocaecal Valve
Nickname for Appendix
Abdominal Tonsil, as its walls are rich in lymphoid tissue
Describe surface anatomy of Vermiform appendix
known as McBurney’s point;
* Imaginary line between umbilicus & ASIS
* Junction between lateral 1/3 and medial 2/3 of that imaginary line
Most common appendix Position
Retrocaecal (75% of the population)
Describe Pelvic Postion of Vermiform Appendix
Appendix hangs down over pelvic brim/ opening, can be directly related to right uterine tube & ovary in female
* 20 % of population
Describe Subcaecal Position of the Vermiform Appendix
It lies horizontally just below Caecum
* In 3% of population
Describe Preileal/postileal Postion of Vermiform Appendix
Appendix passes either in front or behind terminal Ilium
* 2% of population
Describe Retrocolic Postion of Vermiform Appendix
Lies behind (deep to) ascending Colon
Describe Subhepatic Postion of Vermiform Appendix
In congenital short ascending Colon, the appendix lies under the liver
Peritoneal Covering of the Appendix
Mesoappendix
Attachement of mesoappendix
- it’s base is attached to back of lower end of Small intestine mesentery
- Right & left borders are free
Contents of Mesoappendix
- Vermiform Appendix (at right free border)
- Appendicular Vessels (left free border)
- Lymph nodes & vessles
- Sympathetic & para sympathetic fibers
Arterial Supply of Appendix
Appendicular Artery: astermination of Ileocolic A, which is a branch from Sup. Mesenteric A, it runs in the Left free border of Mesoappendix
Venous Drainage of Appenix
Appendicular V: drains into ileocolic V which drains into Sup. mesenteric V (portal Circulation)
Nerve supply of Appendix
- Parasympathetic: Vagus N
- Sympathetic: Superior mesenteric plexus
