Primary Prevention and examples
stop disease from happening
ex: immunization, seat belt, oral contraceptives, education on drug addiction in school
Secondary prevention and examples
identify specific illness in early stage to limit or prevent disability/prevent catastrophic effect
ex: physical assessment, developmental screening, vision screening, breast/testicular exam, pregnancy testing
Tertiary prevention and examples
occurs after disease has occurred; halt disease progression and return to optimal health
ex: rehab center , education for new diabetes diagnosis
What is health promotion?
reduces excess mortality, addresses risk factors, and determinants of health to increase quality of life
Disease prevention vs health promotion
disease prevention = geared towards specific illness prevention
health promotion= more general, increase quality of life and can include the community
Examples of health protection activities
-anything that protects community at large: working conditions, lifestyle choices, air/water quality regulations
