Pathological aging + article Flashcards
Parts of the brain that are affected in dementia
Amygdala; emotion regulation, memory for emotional events
Medial temporal lobe; hippocampus, memory consolidation
Prefrontal circuits and the cognitive functions supported by it
Internal record
strongly affected in dementia.
Sensory deficit hypothesis
Cognitive changes with aging attributed to changes in sensation. Task performance correlates strongly with sensory abilities. and noise also inhibits performance in young adults.
Inhibition hypothesis
Hard time inhibiting strong association, In=ability ot ignore irrelevant information while focussing attention on goal relevant information
Speed of processing model
Cognitive performance can suffer because the slowed mental operations cannot be carried out within necessary time frame, because increased time between mental operations can make it more difficult to access previous info.
