Three stages
Premoral; Young children have no clear sense (preoperational)
Heteronomous moralilty (Rules set by authority figures are sacred (concrete)
Autonomous moraility (Rules and agreements can be discussed (formal operational)
Stage 1 (preconventional)
Avoiding punishment. Rules are obayed. Fear of getting punished. Same as heteronomous
Stage 2 (preconventional)
Instrumental orientation : rules are obeyed for personal gain. Aware that there are two sides to every argument
Stage 3 (Conventional)
Good boy bood girl. Rules obeyed for approval. Interpersonal normative normality
Stage 4 (conventional)
Maintenance of social order. Rules are obeyed to maintain social order. Social system morality. Law and order
Stage 5 (postconventional)
Morality of contract and individual rights. Rules are obeyed when they are impartial. Ethical pinciples
Stage 6 (postconventional)
Morality of conscience. individual establishes own rules in accordance with own ethical principles.
Criticism
Both underestimated the children’s reasoning
Judgement is not the same as the action
Not universal (cultural differences)
