Clinical interviews, eg structured (takes a lot of time)
Behavioral observations (for structured have to be trained, takes time)
Tests of intellectual functioning (IQ tests eg)
Behavior rating scales (lot of questions to compare to norms. NEVER diagnose only based on this)
Laboratory tasks.
Case conceptualization
Clear description of type of problems and their potential causes
Meta-systems approach
Understanding of various systems involved with the child and family are considered in a case conceptuatlization
Evidence based approach
Assessment process is one in which the clinician engages in hypothesis testing and arrives at conclusions that inform interventions based on the data collected during evaluation.
Assessment obligations
Ensure they have appropriate training for the method
Consider clients background in interpreting results
Receive informed consent before assessment
Consider whom assessment feedback should be provided
Take appropriate steps to maintain confidentiality
Obtain releases to provide information from assessment to outside parties.
