Passive Care - Traction Flashcards
Traction: Action
Kinetic (increase volume = decreased pressure)
Traction: Results
Decrease intra-fiscal pressure Reduce IVF encroachment 5% of body weight needed to separate a vertebral joint Break adhesions Fatigue muscle and spasms Increase vascular and lymph flow
Traction: Indications
Acute & Chronic disc syndromes Chronic IVF encroachment DJD Hyperlordosis (decreases) Chronic muscle spasms (fatigues them) Fibrotic adhesions (creates motion)
Traction: Contraindications
Protective muscle spasm Weak bone Osteoporosis Acute Conditions Fracture Dislocations Vascular Disease Lumbar: pregnancy, rib conditions Cervical: tmj, stroke
Traction: Dosage / Cervical
Cervical: begin at 5% of body weight, increase two pounds maximum each treatment
Minimum 10 pounds
Maximum 30-50 pounds
Position: C3-C6 / flexion / 20-28 degrees
Occiput, C1, C2 / neutral / 0 degrees
Traction: Dosage / Cervical
Lumbar: begin at 25% of body weight and increase 5 pounds max with each treatment
Minimum 25%
Maximum 50% or 120 pounds
Position: 90/90 or supine knees bent
Types of Traction: Continuous
Cervicals / Lumbars - days - weeks
Types of Traction: Intermittent
Cervicals / Lumbars - heavy 20 min / light sec - minutes / inhibition
Types of Traction: Inversion
Gravity
Lumbars - Orthopod - Suspended by Hips
Contraindication: high blood pressure
Types of Traction: Positional
decrease pressure best
Types of Traction: Over the Door
Cervicals - face door with 28 degrees of cervical flexion
Types of Traction: Axial
Do not use with osteoporosis, Pagets, Mets (weak bone)
Types of Traction: Rotational
Do not use with facet tropism
Types of Traction: Hydrotherapy Traction
water belts, wings and buoys
