Passive Care - Stages of Healing Flashcards
How many stages of healing?
4 stages of healing
First Stage of Healing
Hemostasis
Hemostasis
Seconds/Minutes
Initial blood clotting to stop bleeding
Second Stage of Healing
Inflammatory
Inflammatory
Hours / Days / Weeks
Acute Phase
Signs of Inflammation: Heat (calor), Redness (rubor), Swelling (tumor), Pain (dolor)
Characteristics: Vasodilation, Increased Capillary Permeability, Phagocytosis by Neutrophils and Macrophages
Some inflammatory chemicals cause pain:
bradykinin, prostaglandins, serotonin
Goal: limit inflammation, PRICES, preserve ROM
Third Stage of Healing
Proliferation
Proliferation
Weeks / Months
Goals: decrease swelling, decrease pain, encourage and increase proliferation, increase pain free rom, begin non-weight bearing proprioceptive training, protective support as needed
Modalities: IFC, Premod, Hi-Volt
Forth Stage of Healing
Remodeling / Maturation
Remodeling / Maturation
Months / Years
Goals: increase pain-free rom, progress proprioceptive training, regain full strength, normal biomechanics, protect and strengthen any residual joint instability
Three Stages of Healing
Inflammation, Repair, Remodel
