Parts of the Cell Flashcards
Cell Membrane
“Bouncer at the Club”, selectively permeable, every cell has this, forms barrier, controls what goes in and our of the cell
Golgi Body
“Post Office”, packages and distributes materials from endoplasmic reticulum
Cytoplasm
“All the stuff in the cell”, gel-like fluid fills most of the cell, moves nutrients, proteins, and organelles within the cell
Nucleus
“Brain or the Boss”, directs cells activities, nucleolus is inside of it
Cell Wall
“Skin”, protects and supports the cell
Vacuole
“Closet or pantry”, stores water, food, waste products, or other materials
Lysosome
“Destroyer or Recycling Center”, breaks down food particles and worn-out cell parts, only found in animal cells
Chloroplast
“Baker or Chef or the Solar Panels”, makes food for cell using energy from sunlight
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse of the Cell”, converts energy in food to energy used by the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum
“Helping Hand”, helps make proteins and other substances
Ribosomes
“Protein-making Factory”, produce proteins needed by the cell
Differences between Plants Cells and Animal Cells
Animal cells are round, plants cells are square.
Animal cells have lysosomes, plant cells have cell wall and chloroplasts.
Animal cells have a smaller vacuole compared to plant cells, which have a large one.
Plant cells stay constant throughout the entire process of cell division, staying rectangular and forming a cell plate at the end, whereas animal cells go from circular, to ovular, to two circles.
