Excretory System Flashcards
excretory
process of removing wastes
Excretory Organs
kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra, lungs, skin, and liver.
Kidneys
two bean-shaped organs that filter blood and regulate the amount of water in the body. The kidneys remove water and urea, a chemical produced from the breakdown of proteins,
nephrons
a small filtering structure in the kidneys that removes wastes from blood and produces urine. This filtration process happens in two stages. First, the nephrons filter both the wastes and the needed materials from the blood. Next, the needed materials are returned to the blood and wastes are excreted.
bladder
most water is excreted from the body in the form of urine, which includes water and urea. Liquid waste collects in the urinary bladder and is expelled through the urethra.

Lungs and Liver
When you exhale, you are not only removing carbon dioxide from the body, but some water as well.
skin
also removes waste. Sweat glands in your skin release water from your cells to help cool your body. Sweat also contains a small amount of urea. The liver produces urea from proteins and other wastes, including pieces of old red blood cells.
