A progressive disorder involving diminishing basal ganglia function.
Resulting in slow, increasingly difficult movement, with resting tremors and muscular rigidity.

What Mms are innervated with Parkinson’s Disease?
All muscles that are innervated can be affected.
What are the commonly affected areas with Parkinson’s?
Normal body movements, Breathing, Skin sensation, bowel movements, Vocal and written communication.
What are known causes for Parkinson’s?
The possible causes can include:
Repeated brain trauma, Cerebralvascular issues, carbon monoxide poisoning.
Pathologies such as:
Brain tumors, Alzheimer’s, Hydrocephalus.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Rigidity of movement in all ranges, resting tremors most often in the hands.
Breathing is shallow, client may be fatigued.
There is less arm swing in the Gait, shuffling quick walk, difficulty staring movements, Balance is off.
What does treatment of a client with Parkinson’s involve?
The goal of treatment is to control symptoms.
Medications control symptoms primarily increasing the levels of dopamine in the brain.
What are Special considerations for massage when you have a client with Parkinson’s?
A gait assessment should be done to look for compensating structures.
Prone is better to have a less flexed position, bolster the shoulders and pillows lengthwise under trunk.
PR rom on the client during treatment.
Treatment should be around 1 time a week and the first treatment should be 30 mins to see how the client reacts.
What are Aggravating factors with Parkinson’s?
Avoid these factors as much as possible, Such as large meals, Alcohol, exposure to warm environment.
What are CI’s for a client that has Parkinson’s?
SNS should not be stimulated, no prolonged painful work, as well as sensitive areas to touch should be avoided.
Pressures and hydro is modified for areas that are sensitive.
When a client with Parkinson’s is changing positions what should be done?
Added care should be taken, The therapist may need to give support to the client when they are getting on / off the table.
