What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?
A progressive axial skeleton disorder,
presenting as pain and stiffness of the spine leading to bony ankylosis of the SI and Spinal joints.
Where does inflammation occur in the spine with Ankylosis Spondylitis?
Inflammation if the Axial Skeleton develops at sites where ligaments insert into bone rather than the synovium itself.
The Chronic, recurrent inflammation results in excessive (Blank)?
Fibrosis changes at the ligament sites around synovial and fibrocartilage joints which in turn develop into synovitis.
What are things that can be observed with a client that has Ankylosing Spondylitis?
Postural assessment may show:
Loss of lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis and head forward posture.
Severe cases may present as a question mark deformity.
What are things you should palpate on a client with Ankylosing Spondylitis?
May reveal mild to significant mm wasting of the back extensors.
mm spasms of back extensors and accessory mms and mms of respiration.
Diminished expansion of rib cage on inhalation.
Fibrosing or calcification of costoclavicular / manubriosternal joints.
