Location: POSTERIOR SURFACE OF THE UPPER LOBES OF THROID NEAR THE INFERIOR THYROID ARTERY
Superior parathyroid glands
Location: MORE VARIABLE, USUALLY ON LATERAL SURFACE OF LOWER THYROID LOBES
Inferior parathyroid glands
Arterial blood supply
Inferior thyroid artery (supplies both superior & inferior parathyroid glands)
Autonomous secretion of PTH by glandular hyperplasia, adenoma or CA
Persistent hypercalcemia
Treatment: Surgery (90% cure)
Primary hyperparathyroidism
Usually during thyroidectomy when it’s blood supply from the inferior thyroid artery is disrupted
Injury to the parathyroid glands
Yellow brown
2x3x5mm size
Weighs 40g
Usually 4 in number but up to 7 glands are possible
