Paper 2 Social Learning Approach Flashcards
What are assumptions of social learning theory?
Behaviour is learnt through experience
New way of learning through observation and imitation
Learning occurs indirectly and directly
How does vicarious reinforcement occur?
Through indirect learning as an observer observes the behaviour/reinforcement and imitates. Mostly successful when reward is given
Who?
Bandura 1961
How are mediational processes broken down?
Attention
Retention
Motor reproduction
Motivation
Who introduced mediational processes?
Bandura
Attention?
How far do we observe behaviour?
Retention?
How well is behaviour remembered?
Motor reproduction?
The ability for the observer to perform the behaviour
Motivation?
How willing are they to perform the behaviour
Role model?
Posess similar characteristics
Attractive
High status
What was bandura’s study A?
Children observed aggressive behaviour or adults to a bobo doll and later replicated this behaviour when playing
What was bandura’s study B?
One set of children was shown a video of an aggressive adult being rewarded for their behaviour. Another set was shown an aggressive afult being told off. The third was shown an adult receiving no consequences.
Then, when playing 1st, 3rd then 2nd showed agression to bobo doll
What are strengths to the social learnig theory?
Recognises the importance of cognitve factors in learning so more comprehensive.
Real world application
Reciprocal determinism - we are influenced by + extert influence on our environment so free will can be present
How can the social learning theory be seen in real world application?
Explains cultural differences and cultural norms in society
What are weaknesses in the social learning theory?
Contrived lab studies - participants may respond to demand characteristics
Little reference to biological factors such as mirror neurons that allow us to emphasise and imitate others
