Paper 2 Biological Approach Flashcards
Biological Assumptions?
All behaviour has a physical basis so biological structures determine thoughts, feelings and behaviour
Examples of biological structures?
Brain
Genes
Neurotransmitters
What is the role of neurotransmitters?
To transmit chemicals in the brains for thoughts and behaviour
What are some affects of imbalance of neurochemicals?
Low levels of serotonin cause lead to ocd
Overproduction of dopamine could lead to schizophrenia
Why are twin studies used?
To investigate if certain psychological characteristics have a genetic basis
How are twin studies conducted?
By analysing concodance rates
The environment must be constant with both twins
Concordance rates?
To what extent do twins share the same characteristics
Monozygotic?
All identical
Dizygotic?
Non-identical
Natural selection?
Any genetically determined characteristics that enhances an individuals survival will continue in future generations
What are the strengths to biological approach?
Real world application
Natural selection - credible by fossils record
Scientific methods - precise and objective meths (EGI, FMRI scans) so reliable
What are limitations of biological approach?
Use of psychoactive drugs are not effective for everyone
So less validity
Biological determinism
Example of real world application in biological approach?
Development of various psychoactive medicines
Psychoactive medications?
Drugs that target specific neurotransmitters to treat mental health disorders
