PAPER 2 - Memory Models Flashcards
Define ENCODING
the way in which information is converted
- visual / auditory / semantic
Define STORAGE
the retention of information over a period of time
Define RETRIEVAL
the recovering of information that has been stored
- depends on how much information there is and how well we know it
Define CHUNKING
grouping different pieces of information and remembering each chunk as a piece of information
What are the three elements of the multi-store model ?
sensory memory - short term store - long term store
How long is information held in the sensory ?
0.25 seconds
Define SELECTIVE ATTENTION
relevant information goes to STM and irrelevant information is filtered out
Where does selective attention occur ?
sensory store
When is selective attention useful ?
when quick reactions depend on being able to concentrate on important info and filter out distractions
What is the STM capacity ?
7+/-2 items
What is the STM duration ?
30 seconds
How can STM duration be increased ?
rehearsal via imagery or verbal repetition
What is the LTM capacity ?
unlimited
What is the LTM duration ?
potential to last a lifetime
Where are motor programmes stored ?
LTM - due to rehearsal
