Pancreas Flashcards
What are the features of chyme in the duodenum?
Hypertonic - fluid from ECF
Low pH
Partially digested
Why is chyme hypertonic as it exits stomach?
Stomach wall impermeable to water
What hormones does the duodenum release?
Secretin
CCK
What is the effect of secretin?
Acts on pancreas - stimulates release of HCO3- component of pancreatic secretion
What is the effect of CCK?
Acts on pancreas to stimulate release of enzymes
What stimulates exocrine secretion from pancreas?
Hormones
- secretin
- CCK
Autonomics
- stimulated by parasympathetic
- inhibited by sympathetic
What cells release hormones?
Acinar cells
What stimulates the release of enzymes from acini?
CCK
Vagus stimulation
What enzymes are released from acini?
Amylases
Lipases
Inactive proteases
Why are proteases in an inactive state?
To prevent digestion of the pancreas
What are inactive proteases stored in?
Zymogen granules
What do pancreas duct cells secrete?
Aqueous component
Bicarbonate
Neutralise the chyme
What duct connects the pancreas to the duodenum?
Pancreatic duct + ampulla of Vater
