First step in pain management of adults?
Assess pain severity
Use psychological, physical interventions
A pain score of 1-3 is given, what does this indicate?
Mild pain
A patient gives a pain score of 1-3, what would you administer?
Oral paracetamol or oral NSAID if no contra-indications
NSAID?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
Example of NSAID’s used in mild pain management?
Ibuprofen
A pain score of 4-6 is given, what does this indicate?
Moderate pain
A patient gives a pain score of 4-6, what would you administer?
Oral paracetamol/NSAID +
Oral Coedine
When would you consider the administration of IV paracetamol?
If the patient presents with a pain score classed as high moderate/low severe (6-8)
In addition to IV morphine if pain is not subsiding
A pain score of 7-10 is given, what does this indicate?
Severe pain
A patient gives a pain score of 7-10, what would you administer?
Intravenous morphine
Entonox when appropriate
