The METHANE model is an established reporting framework which provides a common structure for responders and their control rooms to share major incident information
Minimises room for error/confusion
When is a METHANE report not a METHANE report?
For incidents falling below the major incident threshold ‘METHANE’ becomes an ‘ETHANE’
What does the M in METHANE stand for?
Major incident standby or declared
What does the E in METHANE stand for?
Exact location of incident
- Be as specific as possible

Type of incident
What does the H in METHANE stand for?
Hazards (present and potential)
What does the A in METHANE stand for?
Access and egress routes
What does the N in METHANE stand for?
Number, severity and type of casualties
What does the second E in METHANE stand for?
