Other Cardiac conditions Flashcards
1
Q
Define cardiomyopathy?
A
- Any disease of the cardiac muscle
2
Q
Explain dilated cardiomyopathy?
A
- Heart is often 2 or 3 times bigger than normal
- Heart weak and flabby
- can be genetic
- often associated with alcoholics
- reduced ejection fraction
3
Q
Explain hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
A
- Increased muscle of the heart
- big and solid heart
- dystolic dysfunction
- often seen in athletes
4
Q
Explain restrictive cardiomyopathy?
A
- hear often appears normal
- myocardium stiff
- can be due to amyloid depositon
5
Q
What is amyloid deposition?
A
- abnormal deposition of an abnormal protein in the heart
- can lead to restrictive cardiomyopathy
6
Q
Explain myocarditis?
A
- inflammation of the myocardium
- can be infectious or non-infectious
- heart appears big and beefy
7
Q
What are possible cardiac consequences of rheumatic fever?
A
- potential cause of myocarditis
- mitral valve stenosis
- endocarditis
8
Q
Explain pericarditis?
A
- inflammation of the pericardial layers
- complications include: effusion, tamponade and cardiac failure
9
Q
What is a pericarditis associated with MI?
A
- Dressler syndrome
10
Q
Explain endocarditis?
A
- inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
- often caused by a virulent organism (HACEK)
11
Q
What are risk factors for endocarditis?
A
- rheumatic fever
- congenital heart disease
- prosthetic valve
- PWID
12
Q
What endocarditis is related to someone who has recently had a valve replacement surgery?
A
- s.epidermis
13
Q
What endocarditis is related to PWID?
A
- S. aureus
