What is an Organ?
Collection of tissues that have an identifiable structure and perform specific functions
What is Body System?
Groups of organs acting together for one or more functions
How many Body Systems are there?
11 body systems
What is the Integumentary System?
Largest organ of the body that is the first line of defense against infection and water loss.
What organs consist of the Integumentary System?
Skin, oil and sweat glands, sensory receptors, hair, nails
What is the Skeletal System?
Physical foundation of the human body. Consists of bones and moveable/immovable joints
What is the Muscular System?
Covers, shapes and supports skeletal tissue. Consists of muscles
What is the Nervous System?
Carries messages through central nervous system, controlling and coordinating all bodily functions
What organs consist of the Nervous System?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
What is the Circulatory System?
Controls delivery of blood throughout the body and works with lymphatic channels. Consist of the heart with blood vessels
What is the Immune/Lymphatic System?
Protects body from disease by developing resistances and destroying disease-causing toxins, bacteria, and foreign material. Consists of the Spleen and Lymph
What is the Endocrine System?
Affects the growth, development, sexual activities and normal regulatory processes the body. Consists of specialized glands
What does the Endocrine System consist of?
Adrenal gland, pituitary gland and pancreas
What is the Reproductive System?
Production of children and passing on our genetics. Consists of the uterus, ovaries, penis and testes
What is the Respiratory System?
Enables breathing, supplies body w/ oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide as a waste product
What organs consist of the Respiratory System?
Lungs, trachea and bronchi
What is the Digestive System?
Breaks down food into smaller particles to absorb nutrients or for excretion
What organs consist of the Digestive System?
Small and large intestines, esophagus, stomach, gallbladder and liver
What is the Excretory System?
Refers to the elimination of waste matter. Consists of kidneys and bladder
What are the 5 accessory organs to the Skin?
Integumentary System is made up of the sensory receptors, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands
