Lymphatic/Immune System Flashcards
What is the Lymphatic/Immune System?
Protects the body from disease by developing resistance to pathogens and destroying disease-causing microorganisms
What is the difference between the Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems?
The lymphatic system transports lymph fluid and the circulatory carries blood
What parts consist of the Lymphatic System
Lymph, lymph nodes, thymus, spleen and liver
What are Lymphs?
Liquid composed of changing components in the
interstitial fluid as the fluid is circulating throughout the body,
dispersing white blood cells and cell nutrients, as well as
absorbing toxins and waste.
What are Lymph Nodes?
Gland-like structure found inside
lymphatic vessels
What is the Spleen?
Large lymph node that fights infection and detoxifies the blood
What is the Thymus?
Lymphoid organ of the immune system where T-cells mature
What is the Liver?
Secretes enzymes
necessary for digestion, synthesizes proteins, and detoxifies
the blood; regulates sugar levels in the blood, helps with
decomposition of red blood cells, and produces hormones
needed for body functions
What is Interstitial Fluid?
Solution that bathes and surrounds cells and provides cells with nutrients also removing cell waste
