What is the Endocrine System?
Specialized glands that affect the growth, development, sexual activities and state of health of the body
What are Glands?
Specialized organs that produce chemicals, including hormones necessary for body systems to function optimally
What are Endocrine Glands?
AKA ductless glands release secretions called hormones into bloodstream and influences the welfare of the body
What are Hormones?
(Insulin, adrenaline, estrogen) stimulate functional activity or secretion in other parts of the body
Why is the Endocrine System important?
Treatment plan can be impacted by the functioning of this system. Hormonal imbalances can cause hair growth, effect oil production and increase acne breakouts, melanin production and skin sensitivity
What are the Functions of this system?
Pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes
What does the Pineal gland do?
Plays major role in sexual development, sleep and metabolism
What does the Pituitary gland do?
Most complex organ of this system. Effects growth, blood pressure, labor contractions, breast-milk production, sexual organ functions (men and women), thyroid gland function and conversion of food into energy
What does the Thyroid gland?
Located in neck that secretes hormones. These hormones regulate body’s metabolism, heart and digestive functions, muscle control, brain development, and maintenance of bone mass. Requires iodine from diet
What does the Parathyroid glands do?
Regulate blood calcium and phosphorus levels so nervous and muscular system function properly
What does the Pancreas do?
Secretes enzyme-producing cells responsible for digesting carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The Langerhans cells control insulin and glucagon production
What do the Adrenal glands do?
Located at top of kidneys. Assist in regulation of metabolism, stress response and blood pressure and support of immune system health. Effect skin melanization
What do the Ovaries and Testes do?
Function in sexual reproduction and determine male/female sexual characteristics
