What does the Systemic Circulation

A

AKA General circulation. Carries the oxygenated blood from the heart throughout the body and back to the heart

Q

What are the functions and facts about the Heart?

A

Has 4 chambers and 4 valves, is a cone-shaped organ that pumps blood throughout the body and is regulated by the 10th cranial Vagus nerve

Q

What are Blood Vessels?

A

Tube-like structures that transport blood to and from the heart and then onto various tissues of the body

Q

What are Arteries?

A

Thick-walled, muscular, flexible tubes which carry oxygenated blood away from the heart and to the arterioles

Q

What are Capillaries?

A

Tiny, thin-walled blood vessels that connect the smaller arteries to venues; Brings nutrients to cells and carry away waste materials

Q

What are Venules?

A

Small vessels that connect the capillaries to the veins; Collect blood from the capillaries and drain it into the veins

Q

What are Veins?

A

Thin-walled blood vessels that are less elastic than arteries; Contain cuplike valves that keep blood flowing in one direction to the heart and prevent blood from flowing backward; Carry blood containing waste products back to heart and lungs for cleaning and to pick up oxygen

Q

What are 5 functions of Blood?

A

Carries water, oxygen, nutrition and minerals to all cells and tissue of the body. Carries carbon dioxide away and waste products to be eliminated through the lungs, skin and kidneys. Equalizes body temp, aids in protecting the body from harmful bacteria and infections through white blood cells. Closes injured blood vessels by forming clots preventing blood loss

Q

What do White Blood Cells do?

A

Destroy disease-causing microorganisms

17
Q

What do Platelets do?

A

Stops bleeding by creating blood clots

18
Q

What does Plasma do?

A

Takes away waste from cells, is 90% water and contains proteins, sugars and minerals

19
Q

What are facts about the Blood?

A

8-10 pints which is 3.8-4.7 liters, is sticky and salty, normal temp of 98.6

20
Q

What are the types of Arteries?

A

Common carotid artery (main source of blood supply), external and internal carotid artery (on either side of the neck)

21
Q

What do the Carotid Arteries do?

A

Main source of blood supply to the head, face and neck

22
Q

What are the 2 types of Jugular Veins?

A

External and internal. Run parallel to carotid arteries
