Organizational Commitment
A desire on the part of an employee to remain a member of an organization (employee attitude toward organization)
Types of Organizational Commitment
Affective Commitment, Continuous Commitment, Normative Commitment
Affective Commitment
The desire to remain a part of an organization because of an EMOTIONAL attachment (because you WANT to)
Continuous Commitment
The desire to remain a part of an organization because of the COST OF LEAVING (because you NEED to)
Normative Commitment
The desire to remain a part of an organization because of a feeling of OBLIGATION (because you OUGHT to)
Factors of Affective Commitment
- perceived organizational support
- job characteristics
- interpersonal relationships
Factors of Continuous Commitment
- personal investment
- lack of alternatives
- personal/family issues
Factors of Normative Commitment
- corporate social responsibility (does good for society)
- investment in employee development
Erosion Model
Employees with fewer bonds are more likely to quit
Social Influence Model
Employees who have direct and strong links to ‘leavers’ are more likely to leave
Withdrawal Behaviors
Set of actions that employees perform to avoid the work situation
- psychological
- physical
Psychological Withdrawal Behaviors
Actions that provide mental escapes from work environment
(Ex. daydreaming, socializing, looking busy, cyberloafing/surfing internet, moonlighting/second job)
Physical Withdrawal Behaviors
Actions that provide physical escape (short or long term) from work environment
(Ex. tardiness, long breaks, missing meetings, absenteeism, quitting)
Progression Model (relating withdrawal behaviors)
The various withdrawal behaviors are POSITIVELY correlated (daydreaming -> being late -> absenteeism -> quitting)
Other Models of Relating Withdrawal Behaviors
Independent Forms Model: withdrawal behaviors are uncorrelated
Compensatory Forms Model: withdrawal behaviors are negatively correlated
