Intro to OB Flashcards
Organizational behavior
A social science dedicated to understanding
how people think, feel, and act in organizations
Fundamental questions in OB
What makes people effective at their jobs? (Job Performance)
What makes them want to stay with their employers? (Organizational Commitment)
Evidence-based management
A perspective that argues that
managers should use research evidence to inform their work
Statistical concepts of OB
correlation, models/diagrams, meta analysis
Contingency
not everything has an easy answer ‘well… it depends’
Meta Analysis
- A statistical summary of the relationship between two variables across many
different studies. - A way of combining all the evidence, since individual studies don’t always
agree with each other.
1/8 Rule
1/8 of companies succeed in using OB practices
(1/2 of companies believe in a connection between OB practices and profit, 1/2 of those implement a comprehensive approaches, 1/2 of those companies persist long enough to see profit)
Correlation
(What does a positive, negative, and no correlation mean? What is a small, medium, and large correlation in OB?)
Positive: as one variable increases, the other increases
Negative: as one variable increases, the other decreases
No Correlation: There is little visible pattern between variables
Small: <0.10 or -0.10
Medium: 0.10 - 0.50 or -0.50 - -0.10
Large: >0.50 or -0.50
