psorisis vugaris
patchy skin lesions; accelerated keratinocyte life cycle, cells accumulate in stratum corneum, inflammation in dermal papillae, cyclic and etiology s unknown
freckles
spots with extra pigment; increase in melanin without increase in malanocytes; fade in winter and darken in summer
vitiligo
patches lack melanocytes; unknown etiology but associated with systemic diseases (hypo/hyperthyroidism, DM, addison’s disease, pernicious anemia, leprosy)
moles (naevi)
proliferation of melanocytes
malignant melanoma
melanocytes become mitotically active and invade dermis; very invasive and metastatic; surgery/chemotherapy
effects of splenectomy
increased number of abnormal RBCs and larger platelet clumps;, increased rick of bacterial septicemia, liver takes up blood filtration
infectious mononucleosis
caused by epstein-barr virus (EBV) on mucus and saliva
how does mono spread
first replicates in nasopharyngeal epithelium and respiratory epithelium; spreads to salivay gland and lymph nodes then to liver, spleen B cells and blood; B cells infected as circulate thru oropharynx
