oral cavity muscles Flashcards
Palatoglossus function and innervation
o a superficial muscle that creates the palatoglossal arch
o elevates posterior tongue – important for swallowing
o innervated by CN10; inferior to soft palate
Palatopharyngeus function and innervation
o a superficial muscle that creates the palatopharyngeal arch
o pulls walls of pharynx superiorly and anteriorly during swallowing
o innervated by CN10; inferior to soft palate
palatine tonsils found?
FOUND BETWEEN palatoglossal arch and palatopharyngeal arch lateral to uvula
what makes on arch?
muscle PLUS mucosal fold = arch
what are 4 palate muscles?
Palatoglossus, Palatopharyngeus, tensor veli palatini, levator veli palatini
tensor veli palatini innervationand action
o CN3
o Tenses soft palate and opens mouth of auditory tube
levator veli palatini
o CN10
o Elevates soft palate, closes nasopharynx
o Pulls uvula and soft palate posteriorly and superiorly so when you swallow food it goes DOWN and not up
innervation to 4 muscles
ALL are CN10
EXCEPT tensor veli palatini
innervation of glossal muscles muscles?
all 8 innervated by CN 12
EXCEPT palatoglossus as CN10
extrinsic glossal muscles?
styloglossus, genioglossus, hyoglossus, and palatoglossus
extrinsic glossal do what?
all oringiate OUTSIDE of tongue and act to move tongue as a whole
*does not change shape
intrinsic glossal muscles?
superior longitudinal, vertical, transverse. inferior longitudinal
intrinsic glossal do what?
located purely WITHIN tongue and act to change SHAPE
styloglossus action
tongue retrusion and elevation
*extrinsic
genioglossus action
protrusion of the tongue
*extrinsic
