Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
Temporal fossa formed by
- Frontal process of zygo bone
- Zygo process of frontal bone
- Superior temporal line
- Zygomatic arch
Temporal fossa filled with
teporalis muscle
what is the space below temporal fossa
infratemporal fossa
what borders does the zygomatic arch form?
zygo arch is inferior border of tepmoral fossa and superior border of infratemporal fosaa
roof of infratemporal fossa?
1) infratemporal surface of greater winger of sphenoid (deepest)
2) infratemporal cest of greater wing od sphenoid bone
3) zygomatic arch (most lateral/superficial)
why doesn’t the infratemporal fossa have an inferior boundary?
contents are all soft tissues, no bone
infratemporal fossa is bounded by
- superiorly by zygomatic arch
- laterally by ramus of mandible (fossa is deep to ramus)
- superiorly by infratemporal crest and infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid; zygomatic arch
- anteriorly by infratemporal surface of maxilla
- medially by lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid
- posterior by mandibular fossa and styoloid/mastoid processes
infratemporal contains?
1) V3 (chorda tympani of facial nerve, bracnhes of V2, otic ganglion, lesser petrosal n)
2) muscles of mastication
3) maxillary artery and vein
4) ptygoud plexus
internal oblique ridge of mandible is important for?
- -intra-oral injections= acts as landmark for inferior alveolar nerve block
- -insertion point for temporalis muscle
otic ganglion is found?
in infratemporal fossa
lingual nerve carries? picks up?
- carries sensation from the flood of mouth and general sensation from anterior 2/3
- picks up chorda tympani from CN7, which carries both para and taste to ant 2/3
posterior superior alveolar nerve
innervate maxillary teeth
*from V2
Otic Ganglion and lesser petrosal nerve
1) Lesser petrosal carries pre-syn parasym from CN9
2) Go to otic ganglian which is in infratemporal fossa
3) Synapses occurs
4) From the otic ganglia, the POST-syn para hitch a ride on V3 on auricular temporal nerve to get to parotid gland
Otic Ganglion houses the cells of?
parasympathetic innervation to parotid gland, originating from CN9
Frey’s syndrome
Typically result of a parotidctomy for a benign tumor of parotid gland; you cannot avoid severing innervation
Auricular temporal nerves that was causing para secretion from gland NOW innervate the skin and causes sweating when you eat
Sweating is the characterized sign
