Oral Cavity and Pharynges Flashcards
Why does soft palate and uvula elevate when swallowing?
To block off opening of nasopharynx.
Fauces
Opening between oral cavity and oropharynx
Arches of pharynx
What’t between them?
Glossopalatine arch (ant) Pharyngo palatine arch (post)
Palatine tonsil
Epithelium covering tongue
Lightly keratinized start squam epi
Muscles acting when swallowing to lower pharyngotempanic tube to equalize pressure?
Tensor levator palatini m.
Levator veli palatini m.
Superior constrictor m.
Where does parotid duct open?
Oral vestibule near 2nd upper molar
What gland is biggest?
Which gland produces most saliva?
Biggest - parotid
Most saliva - submandibular gland
Where does submandibular gland ducts open?
Next to both sides of lingual frenulum
Components of gomphosis joint (3)
Roots, dental alveoli, and periodontal L. (binds them together).
How many permanent teeth?
32
Describe layout of teeth
2 central incisors 2 lateral incisors 2 canines 2 premolars 3 molars
Innervation of tensor veli palatini m.
CN V, V3
Innervation of levator veli palatini m.
CN X
Paralysis of tensor veli palatini m. and levator veli palatini m. can cause:
Reflux of oral contents into nasal cavity and dysfunction of pharyngotympanic tube.
Process of swallowing
- Voluntary. Bolus compressed against palate and pushed from mouth into oropharynx (ms. of tongue).
- Involuntary. Soft palate is elevated, suprahyoid ms. and longitudinal pharyngeal ms. elevate larynx.
- Involuntary. Contraction of pharyngeal constrictor ms. to move bolus into esophagus.
