Cranial Autonomics Flashcards
What type of fibers do we are about with ANS of the head?
GVE
What does the SNS do in the head?
Fibers are post-ganglionic and from the superior cervical ganglion and travel on vessels to reach their target.
PSNS overview in the head
Fibers are pre-ganglionic from nuclei in the brain and synapse at one of 4 ganglia and piggy back on CN V.
CNs that carry PSNS
CNs 3, 7, 9, 10
Horner’s syndrome
SNS overactivity.
Sx: ptosis, anhidrosis, miosis.
CN thru cribiform plate
CN I
CN thru Optic canal
CN II
CNs thru superior orbital fissure
CN III, IV, V (V1), VI
CNs thru internal auditory meatus
CN VII, VIII
CNs thru jugular foramen
CN XI, X, XI
CN thru hypoglossal foramen
CN XII
What nerves from the ophthalmic n. does PSNS travel on?
Lacrimal n. –> lacrimal glands
Short ciliary n. –> ciliary ms. of the eye
What nerves from the maxillary n. does PSNS travel on?
Zygomatic n. –> lacrimal glands
Greater and Lesser palatine n. –> palate mucosa
Posterior superior nasal n. –> posterior superior part of nasal cavity.
What nerves from the mandibular n. does PSNS travel on?
Lingual n. –> submandibular and sublingual glands.
Auriculotemporal n. –> parotid glands
CN III nucleus and ganglion
CN III
Edinger-Westphal nucleus –> ciliary ganglion
CN VII nucleus and ganglion
CN VII
Superior salivary nucleus –> pterygopalatine and submandibular ganglia
CN IX nucleus and ganglion
CN IX
Inferior salivary nucleus –> otic ganglion
V1 goes to what ganglion ?
Ciliary ganglion
V2 goes to what ganglia?
Pterygopalatine and submandibular ganglia
V3 goes to what ganglion?
Otic ganglion
How do we get PSNS to the lacrimal gland?
Greater petrosal n. (from facial n.) meets with deep petrosal n. (SNS) become the N of the pterygoid canal and synapse in the pterygopalatine ganglion with lacrimal n. and zygomatic n. to innervate the lacrimal gland.
How do we get PSNS to the sublingual and submandibular glands?
Chorda tympani n. (from facial n.) meets with lingual n. (from V3) and synapses in the submandibular ganglion and travels on vessels to the sublingual and submandibular glands.
How do we get PSNS to the parotid gland?
Lesser petrosal n. (from glossopharyngeal n.) and synapses in the otic ganglion with auriculotemporal n. to innervate the parotid gland.
