hyperthyroid disease
what is GCA?
granulomatous disease or large to medium vessels
results in infarction of the anterior optic nerve
what vessels are affected in GCA?
branches of the external carotid
features of GCA?
headache jaw claudication painless loss of eyesight tender temporal artery scalp tenderness
what disease is associated with GCA?
polymyalgia rheumatica
Ix for GCA? results?
opthalmoscopy (pale and swollen disc)
temporal artery biopsy
ESR, PV, CRP (raised)
Tx for GCA?
methylpred IV 50mg-1g to save other eye
risk factors for optic neuritis?
30-50yrs

features of optic neuritis?
pain on eye movement visual loss colour vision loss central scotoma RAPD gradual recovery
pathology behind optic neuritis?
demyelinating disease of the optic nerve
Ix for optic neuritis?
MRI
CSF (oligoclonal bands for MS)
NMO antibody
