Ophthalmology Flashcards
Conjunctiva
Thin membrane that covers the inner surface of the eyelid and the sclera
Cornea
Transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil
Sclera
White outer wall of the eye; tough, fibrous tissue that extends from the cornea to the optic nerve
Periorbital
Situated around the orbit of the eye
Diplopia
Double vision
Photophobia
Abnormal intolerance to light
Arcus Senilis
White, gray, or blue opaque ring in the corneal margin
Chemosis
Swelling of the conjunctiva
Hyphema
Blood in the front area of the eye
Nystagmus
Involuntary eye movements horizontally, vertically, or rotary
Papilledema
Optic disc swelling that is caused by increased intracranial pressure that is visualized on fundoscopic exam
Ptosis
Drooping of the upper eyelid
Scleral icterus
Yellowing of the sclera
Subconjunctival Hemorrhage
Bright red patch appearing in the white of the eye
PERRL
Pupils equal, round and reactive to light
EOMI
Extra ocular movements intact
Conjunctivitis
Swelling (inflammation) or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids (conjunctiva)
Corneal abrasion
Scratch on the cornea
Retinal Detachment
Separation of the light-sensitive membrane in the back of the eye (the retina) fromits supporting layers
Hordeolum Stye
inflamed oil gland on the edge of your eyelid, where the lash meets the lid
Fluorescein
Dye used in eye exam to observe corneal abnormalities such as an abrasion or foreign body
Fundoscopic exam
Examination of the ocular fundus using an ophthalmoscope
Slit Lamp Exam
Instrument consisting of a high-intensity light source that can be focused to shine a thin sheet of light into the eye to examine the front parts of the eye, including the cornea, the lens, the iris, and vitreous gel.
Visual Acuity Test
Determines the smallest letters a person can read on a standardized chart (Snellen chart) or a card held 14 - 20 feet away
