Indications
Any unconscious patient without a gag reflex requiring ventilatory assistance
Contraindications 1
Patients with an intact gag reflex
Contraindications 2
Patients initially presenting with trismus
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Recognizes the need for an airway adjunct (snoring, inability to ventilate adequately w/ a BVM)
Procedure 3
Maintain manual cervical immobilization throughout the procedure if C-spine injury is suspected.
Procedure 4
Select the appropriate size OPA, measure from the corner of the mouth to the tip of earlobe or angle of the jaw
Procedure 5
Open the patients mouth with the cross finger technique
Procedure 6
Insert the OPA with the tip facing the roof of the mouth and when reaching the soft palette rotate 180
Procedure 7
Alternate: use the tongue blade eliminate the need to rotate (preferred method in pediatrics)
Procedure 8
Advance the opa untill the flange rests against the patients teeth and the other end opening into the pharynx.
Procedure 9
Immediately remove the device if the patient begins to retch or gag
Procedure 10
Assess airway patency for improvement in chest rise and fall, pulse oximetry, lung sounds, bag compliance
