External Jugular Flashcards
Indication
When all other means of peripheral cannulation has been exhausted
Contraindications
Starting IV can not delay the transport time of a patient meeting trauma alert criteria
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Place the patient supine in the trendelenburg position and have there head turned in the opposite direction (do not turn head with suspected c-spine injury)
Procedure 3
Select an External jugular vein IV site midway between angle of the jaw and midclavicular line.
Procedure 4
Prepare the IV site with alcohol or iodine wipe disinfecting with overlapping concentric circles.
Procedure 5
Stabilize the vein by applying light traction to vein and occlude venous return with one finger above the clavicle
Procedure 6
Point the catheter at the midclavicular line and insert bevel up at 10-30* angle
Procedure 7
Insert the needle and catheter midway between the jaw and clavicle
Procedure 8
When a flash is visualized continue to advance catheter another .5cm
Procedure 9
Slide the catheter over the needle while stabilizing the needle
Procedure 10
Apply and maintain pressure on the proximal end of the catheter to stop escaping blood and or air intrusion
Procedure 11
Remove IV needle and dispose of into an approved sharps container
Procedure 12
Quickly attach tubing or MAP
Procedure 13
Open drip chamber and tubing and verify quality of fluid flow and set at desired flow rate

Examine IV for infiltration
Procedure 15
Secure IV catheter using the chevron technique and anchor tubing
Procedure 16
Take the patient out of the trendelenburg position
Procedure 17
Monitor patient and record solution used, catheter size location of site volume infused.
