Indications
Decreased LOC, Unresponsiveness, Patients with HX of Diabetes
Contraindications
Determining blood glucose level should not delay transport of the critical trauma patient
Procedure 1
Take standard precautions
Procedure 2
Explains the procedure to the patient and gain consent if concious and not altered
Procedure 3
Prepare the glucometer and equipment (verbalize calibration and expiration date)
Procedure 4
Remove test strip and place it into the glucomenter
Procedure 5
Prepare the puncture site by cleaning it with with an alcohol prep pad allowing it to dry
Procedure 6
Puncture the patients fingertip using lancet supplied by the manufacturer according to their recommendations
Procedure 7
Dispose of lancet into sharps container
Procedure 8
Squeeze finger gently until a drop of blood presents itself, and apply to the test strip
Procedure 9
Apply a dressing to the site and have the patient hold pressure until the bleeding stops (do not use alcohol prep to stop the bleeding at the site)
Procedure 10
Apply a bandage over the site to prevent infection
Procedure 11
Observe and record findings
Procedure 12
Identify normal blood glucose limits as 60mg dl- 120mg dl
