Indications 1
Unresponsive patients and patients with AMS who have an intact gag reflex

Presence of facial (specifically below the nose) fracture or skull fracture.
Procedure 1
Standard precautions

Recognizes the need for airway adjunct (snoring, inability to ventilate adequately w/ a BVM)
Procedure 3
Maintain manual cervical immobilization throughout the procedure if c-spine injury is suspected
Procedure 4
Select the appropriate size NPA, measure from the tip of the nose to the angle of the jaw or tip of the earlobe
Procedure 5
Determine the patients larger nare
Procedure 6
Lubricate the npa with water soluble lubricant
Procedure 7
Demonstrate right nare insertion, bevel side toward septum, straight back along nasal floor
Procedure 8
Demonstrate left nare insertion, bevel side towards the septum and gently rotate 180 during insertion, straight back along the nasal floor
Procedure 9
Insert slowly until flange rest against nostril.
Procedure 10
Assess airway patency for improvement in (chest rise, lung sounds, pulse oximetry, and bag compliance)
