Indications
Patients requiring rapid medication administration absorption when IV and or IO access is not readily available
Containdication
Allergy to medication being administered
Procedure 1
Standard Precautions
Procedure 2
Confirm protocols (or med direction) and the 6 rights of drug administration, Right, Patient, Medication, Route, Dose, Time, Documentation
Procedure 3
List approved medications for delivery through MAD,
Versed, Valium, Fentanyl, Ativan, Narcan, Glucagon, Toradol, Romazican
Procedure 4
Explain procedure, side effects, and confirm patient not allergic to medication
Procedure 5
Inspect medication for packaging sterility, expiration date, color, and clarity as applicable
Procedure 6
Prepare necessary administration equipment
Procedure 7
Draw up medication from vial or glass ampule (shake down) then purge all air from syringe prior to attaching MAD
Procedure 8
Inspect nostrils and determine the larger less deviated or obstructed nostril
Procedure 9
Administer medication with firm pressure on the syringe plunger allowing medication to mist
Procedure 10
If bolus is more than 1ml than administer remaining volume is other nostril
Procedure 11
Monitor patient , document medication (DART) and patient response
