Confirm protocol (or orders for medication) & six rights of drug administration), Route, Patient, Medication, Dose, Date, Documentation
Procedure 3
Explain procedure , side effects, and confirm the patient is not allergic to medication
Procedure 4
Select proper medication for administration
Procedure 5
Inspect medication for packaging sterility, expiration date, color, and clarity as applicable

Properly identify the commonly used injection sites and fluid administration limitation.

Max IM injection deltoid <2ml, dorsal gluteal 5 ml, vastus lateralis 5ml, rectus femoris 5ml
Procedure 8
Prepare the necessary equipment, needles 1-2” and 21ga
Procedure 9
Draw up the medication from vial or glass ampule (shake down) and purge all the air from syringe
Procedure 10
Prepare the site with alcohol or iodine wipe to disinfect in overlapping concentric circles
Procedure 11
Apply tension to puncture site and insert needle at 90* into muscle tissue.
Procedure 12
Pull back on the plunger to aspirate for blood in syringe, if no blood present inject medication.
Procedure 13
If blood appears, remove the needle and discard in sharps container.
Procedure 14
Dispose of needle into an approved sharps container
Procedure 15
Apply direct pressure (band-aid) to injection site
Procedure 16
Monitor patient, document medication DART, and patient response.
