What is the presentation of Ondansetron?
A
4mg ODT
8mg in 4mL glass amp.

What is the pharmacology and action of Ondansetron?
A
Antiemetic.
Action:
5HT3 antagonist which blocks receptors centrally and peripherally.

List the PEI’s for Ondansetron.
A
- Undifferentiated nausea and vomiting.
- Prophylaxis for spinally immobilised or eye injured pts
- Vestibular nausea in pts aged <21

List the contraindications for Ondansetron.
A
- Known hypersensitivity
- Concurrent apomorphine use
- Known long QT syndrome
- Hypokalaemia or hypomagnesaemia

List the precautions for Ondansetron.
A
- Pts with liver disease should not exceed 8mg a day
- Pts on diuretics may have underlying electrolyte imbalances
- Contains aspartame; not for phenylketonurics
- Concurrent use with Tramadol
- Pregnancy

List the common and rare side effects of Ondansetron.
A
Common:
- Constipation
- Headache
- Fever
- Dizziness
- Rise in liver enzymes
Rare:
- Hypersensitivity rxns (inc. anaphylaxis)
- QT prolongation
- Widened QRS complex
- Tachyarrhythmias (inc. AF and SVT)
- Seizures
- Extrapyramidal rxns
- Visual disturbances (inc. transient loss of vision)

Should be done as a slow push over a minimum of 30s.
