What is the pharmacology for Morphine?
An opioid analgesic.
What are CNS and cardiovascular actions of Morphine?
CNS Effects:
- Depression
- Respiratory depression
- Depression of cough reflex
- Stimulation (changes of mood, euphoria, vomiting, pinpoint pupils)
- Dependence
CV Effects:
- Vasodilation
- Decreases conduction velocity through AV node
How is Morphine metabolised and excreted?
Metabolised by the liver.
Excreted by the kidneys.
List the PEI’s for Morphine.
- Pain relief
2. Sedation to maintain intubation
List the contraindications for Morphine.
- Hx of hypersensitivity
- Renal impairment/failure
- Late second stage of labour
List the precautions for Morphine.
EACHPARK
- Elderly/frail
- Hypotension
- Respiratory depression
- Current asthma
- Respiratory tract burns
- Known addiction to opioids
- Acute alcoholism
- Pts on MAOI’s
What routes can Morphine be administered via?
IM
IV
Subcutaneous
List the side effects of Morphine.
BENDHARP CNS: 1. Drowsiness 2. Respiratory depression 3. Euphoria 4. Nausea, vomiting 5. Addiction 6. Pin-point pupils
CV:
- Hypotension
- Bradycardia
List the special notes regarding Morphine.
- Is an S8 - control with accountability/responsibility.
- Side effects can be reversed with Naloxone.
- Wheals may be seen in the vein due to histamine release - this is not an allergy.
List the onset, peak and duration for IV Morphine.
O: 2 to 5 mins
P: 10 mins
D: 1 to 2 hours

O: 10 to 30mins
P: 30 to 60mins
