Olfactory System Flashcards
1
Q
Olfactory Neurons Types and Function
A
- Olfactory Sensory Neurons
- project cilia into mucous layer and have odorant receptor proteins - Secondary Sensory Neurons
- found in the olfactory bulb forming the olfactory Nerve
2
Q
Olfactory Sensory Neurons
A
- odorant receptors located on the cell membrane
- 400 different types all are GPCR’s
3
Q
Olfactory Signal Transduction
A
- Odour molecule binds to a GPCR (Golf)
- Activates AC
- AC converts ATP into cAMP
- cAMP opens sodium channels which depolarizes the cell
4
Q
Olfactory Sensory Pathway
A
- After the olfactory bulb —> olfactory tract —> olfactory cortex
- disperses to either the cerebral cortex or the limbic system
