Official lecture 5 Flashcards
what was josephson getting at
she talks about some laws that impact people’s sexuality and loves, she is vexed by laws and policies (especially 3 that came out in the states in the 1900’s) that came out and said what the idea cities is; white, heterosexual, et
even though this doesn’t represent everyone
with sexuality, we deal with human bodies and individuals so we need something broader
what does Browning say
“The family as a group unit has been and remains today an intergenerational reality that spreads mutual care outward into society and forward into the future cycle of the generations. It is, of course, the greatest welfare system ever devised by the human race, the one upon which all other support systems, either private or governmental, finally depend and only modestly enhance” (Browning, 342)
he looks at the family, the mother father and offspring as the base… everything else we do with family comes from the foundation of this— we can try to substitute and advance it, bu tthis is the base
what is brownings main points
kin altruism
what is kin altruism
“…the idea that in both creation as God intended it and in the rhythms of nature as revealed through naturalistic observation, it was commonly assumed that ‘natural’ parents were more deeply invested in their children and, on average, more consistent sources of care and nurture than all substitutes” (Equality and the Family, 352).
he isn’t saying he is against adoption, this reflects what he says earlier
the parents that conceive and bear the child are the best suited parents because they are invested, it is an investment that has inheritance and reaches forward as well (genetics)
he values freedom and equality significantly in his appearch to things, but he is a critique in the advances in the marriage, his argument is that we need to encourage and support a more stable core for society and as this basic foundation
who are the two contrasting people
josephson and browning
what is joseph position
is of the position that the basically political unit is the individual— adults aren’t able to express their freedom enough and children cant grow to express their freedom enough. her concern is the relationshops, she wants the child to have care giveres; she isn’t very concerned about the relationship over the caregivers themselves, as long as they are concerned and care for the child
what is brownings position
sees the family as a basic institutional, sees the natural affinity of parents for their offspring as important for society and its basic structure, he argues that protecting conjureality is importance is protecting the fear of freedom. He argues that we should have the naturally invested parents
what topic does Scruton discuss
Human Beauty
what does Scruton say
Challenge to evolutionary psychology
Challenge to Plato’s separation of contemplation from desire
Sexual desire pursues satisfaction
Contemplation satisfies itself
he challenged the idea that beauty is this hardwired thing that is necessary
he says that it could be the reason for the hardwired issue, but it may not be
he challenges plato
he doesnt want to divid beauty into 2 categories
he raises this question of what can be done with another person’s beauty
what is The beauty Myth
“a violent backlash against feminism that uses images of female beauty as a political weapon against women’s advancement… As women released themselves from the feminine mystique of domesticity, the beauty myth took over its lost ground, expanding as it waned to carry on this work of social control.”
after all the advancements women have made, they still remain chained to myths of beauty
they remain measured against cultural ideas of beauty— particularly ones that have been controlled by men
