Q

what counts as family

A

constructionist view/definition of family; the idea that it is culturally dependant, it is conditioned by society and those that me before you, there isn’t a straight line telling us what a family is
Nussbaum; what counts as family is ultimately what the state counts as a family
the state provides different benefits and support, but what the state says is family is what counts
if we were to contrast the constructionist view of Nussbaum’s constructionist view; a natural notion of family, a genetic connection, family is what is produced by a man and a woman and their offspring

Q

what is the Aristotelian Family Theory

A

for him the family is fundamental in the way that the state (temporary authority) is not
2 ways of thing of family; one is that it simply what we find in society and what we are conditioned to, the second is that family forms this seedbed of society (Aristotle thinks this too)— family exists prior to the state, the state relies on the family in a way that the family does not rely on the state

A

entails full equality between husband and wife and a commitment to the reflection, communication, and openness needed to implement it

Q

what is Kin Altruism

A

“…the idea that in both creation as God intended it and in the rhythms of nature as revealed through naturalistic observation, it was commonly assumed that ‘natural’ parents were more deeply invested in their children and, on average, more consistent sources of care and nurture than all substitutes” (Equality and the Family, 352).

natural parenthood meant this investment this hardwiring to care
he isnt ignoring to the fact that the wiring gets crossed at times, he knows there is abuse and he doesnt reject adoption but he says that this family kinship forms the basis of society in general

Q

Is there a stable core to family variability?

A

“The family as a group unit has been and remains today an intergenerational reality that spreads mutual care outward into society and forward into the future cycle of the generations. It is, of course, the greatest welfare system ever devised by the human race, the one upon which all other support systems, either private or governmental, finally depend and only modestly enhance” (Browning, 342).
