Abortion
Termination of pregnancy before 20 weeks
Abruptio placentae
Partial or full detachment of the placenta after 20 weeks
Eclampsia
A grave form of pregnancy induced hypertension characterized by convulsions coma protein urial and edema
Gravida
The number of all current and past pregnancies
Para
The number of past pregnancies that have remained viable to delivery
Placenta
A vascular fetal organ through which the fetus absorbs oxygen nutrients and other substances and excretes carbon dioxide and other wastes
Placenta previa
Placental implantation in the Lower uterine segment partially or completely covering the cervical opening
Preeclampsia
Onset of acute hypertension after the twenty fourth week of gestation
Uterine rupture
Traumatic rupture of the uterine wall
Umbilical cord
Two arteries one vein
Arteries = deoxygenated
Vein= oxygenated
Assisting delivery
When crowning apply gentle palm pressure to the infants head to prevent an explosive delivery
If sac still not broken tear the sac with finger pressure to allow the fluid to escape
Check for cord looped around neck slip it over baby’s head
Suction
Deliver the rest of the baby
Gentle pressure guide the baby’s head down
Cutting the cord
Clamp the cord 4-6 inches away from the baby
Cut between the two clamps
Placenta delivery
It normally delivers after 20 minutes but if it doesn’t don’t delay transport
If tear of the perineum happens place sanitary napkins and apply direct pressure
Cord prolapse
Hips elevated
O2
Prevent bearing down
Apply moist sterile dressing to the exposed cord
With gloved hand push baby back in elevate the exposed part to relieve pressure do not reposition the cord, keep hand position during transport
Pulmonary embolism
Common in pregnancy death
From a blood clot in the pelvic circulation
