What is OC?
A
A serious condition that affects the liver in pregnancy. Bile acids in the life do not flow properly and therefore build up in the body.

What is the treatment advised?
A
- Vitamin K
- Ursodeoxycilic acid
- Regular blood tests to assess liver function
- Plan for IOL if symptoms persist

Name some symptoms of OC?
A
- uncontrollable, unexplained itching to palms of the hands and soles of the feet
- raised LFTs
- raised bile acids
- darkened urine and pale bowel movements
- jaundice (rare)

What is the causes of OC?
A
Unsure - more likely to get it again if there is previous history of the condition

What is the role of the midwife
A
- Referral when symptoms present
- Regular blood tests
- Continuous fetal monitoring in labour
- Regular CTGs
- Advise women of signs and symptoms of the condition

List some complications with obstetric cholestasis
A
- Increased perinatal morbidity and mortality
- Premature delivery
- Meconium stained liquor
- Fetal distress and IUFD
