What is epilepsy?
A common neurological condition with a tendency to have recurrent seizures
What is a seizure caused by?
A sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain, causing a temporary disruption in the normal message pathway between brain cells
What can trigger a seizure?
- stress
- anxiety
- lack of sleep
- missing a dose of anti-epileptic drugs
- excessive alcohol and drugs
Name the 2 types of seizures
Partial and generalised
What are the 2 types of partial seizures?
Simple partial and complex partial
Names 3 types of generalised seizures
Absence Myoclonic Tonic Tonic clonic Atonic
Explain some preconceptual advice women should consider
- Folic acid prior to conception
- A/N screening
- Vitamin K at birth
- Have epilepsy review
- Encourage breastfeeding
What are 3 complications with epilepsy?
- Status epilepticus
- Trauma
- Sudden unexpected death
What is sudden epilepticus?
A seizure that lasts longer than 30 minutes - can be fatal
What trauma can occur during a seizure?
During convulsion:
- head trauma
- hot water burns
- falls
- tongue biting
