What is gestational diabetes?

A

A glucose intolerance that is diagnosed in pregnancy. The baby cannot produce enough insulin which helps to control blood sugars

What are the symptoms of gestational diabetes?

A
Increased thirst
Glycosuria
Need to PU more frequently 
Dry mouth
Increased tiredness / fatigue

What are some risk factors for getting gestational diabetes?

A
  • Rasied BMI
  • Previous GDM
  • Family origin e.g south Asian, Chinese and Afro Caribbean
  • Parental / sibling diabetes

What is the treatment of gestational diabetes?

A
  • diet controlled (if stable)
  • accurate recording of blood sugars ( pre and post )
  • insulin treatment if poorly controlled

What are 4 complications of GDM?

A
  1. Polyhydramnious
  2. Macrosomic baby
  3. Neonatal hypoglycaemia
  4. IUFD

What is the role of the midwife with gestational diabetes?

A
  • full explanation of the condition
  • escalation when women present with 2x 1+ or 1x 2+ of glucose
  • work with MDT for plan of care
  • ensure women are aware to monitor fetal movements due to increased risk of IUFD
  • advice diet change and support / reassurance
  • inform of future increased risk of type 2 diabetes
