What is a DVT?
A
- it is formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, partially or completely occluding blood flow
- more at risk due to gravity uterus on the inferior vena cava and an increase in coagulation factors.

What are some signs and symptoms of a DVT?
A
- pain in the area where the clot is
- redness and swelling in the area
- difficulty weight bearing on affected leg

What are some complications with DVT?
A
- Pulmonary embolism
- Post-thrombotic syndrome

What is treatment for DVT?
A
- Doppler
- Heparin
- Oral anticoagulation

Role of the midwife in preventing a DVT?
A
- VTE risk assessment at booking, during labour and postnatally
- Apply TED stockings if needed
- Promote hydration, mobility and nutrition
- Advise if travelling = leg exercises, walk about where possible, don’t drink alcohol as can cause dehydration
