What is Crohn’s disease?
A
Chronic inflammation, ulceration and scaring anywhere from the mouth to the rectum (most commonly the small intestine)

A
- abdo pain
- urgent diarrhoea
- dehydration
- severe tiredness
- weight loss
- fever

Name 4 complications of Crohns
A
- Intestinal obstruction cause by adhesions
- Increased gallstones
- Painful skin complaints
- Arthritis

When would vaginal birth be contraindicated?
A
If there is active perianal disease or an ileoanal pouch

Why is anaemia common?
A
Lack of iron, folate and vitamin B as a result of malabsorption

What is the medical management of Crohns?
A
- Depends on site of the disease:
Anti-inflammatory drugs containing mesalazine are commonly used.
Ampiliccilin, cephalosporins, tetracycline

What is the role of the midwife?
A
- Good history taking
- Obstetric referral
- Make woman aware of contact numbers
- Documentation
