Autosomal recessive disorder
It may affect the respiratory tract, male reproductive system, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract.

- Delayed puberty

What are the goals of treatment?
A
- Maintain lung function
- Maintain quality of life
- Treatment involves daily physiotherapy
- Dietary supplementation is important

What are some issues with pregnancy and cystic fibrosis?
A
Needs adequate dietary supplementation
Respiratory failure
Pulmonary hypertension
Susceptible to recurrent infections

Role of the midwife antenatally..
A
- MDT approach
- Booking at consultant led unit
- Support woman throughout pregnancy and reinforce adherence to treatment and ensure engagement
- Encourage dietary supplementation

Role of the midwife in labour…
A
- Need to be mindful of potential risk to woman and baby with respect to respiratory failure
- Ensure oxygen is available in the room
- Continuous electronic fetal monitoring
- Avoid prolonged pushing and the Valhalla manoeuvre

What is the role of the midwife postnatally..
A
- Encourage regular management routine and offer additional support
- Infant feeding may be an issue if woman is on certain medication
- Nutritional supplements
- Be alert for signs of respiratory infection
